Tiffany, Recruiter - "Don't feel guilty - it will be good for both of you and your needs are equally as important as theirs."

How old was your child / children when you returned to work? 9 months.  It was around the 6 month mark when I started feeling a bit restless & started thinking about returning to work.

How hard was it for you to find child care? Before having my daughter I put her name down at a couple of centres. I’m currently in a fortunate position where my family share the responsibility of caring for my daughter during the days spent in the office.

How did you cope with the combined challenge of your child going to child care and you returning to work? N/A

Did you return to the same job? If no, why? Yes.  For me it was better the devil you know. I figured it would be an easier transition with an employer that knows me well and if it doesn’t work out then I could find something else.  Since going back to work nearly 5 months ago, I’m now looking at starting my own business.

Are you part time, full time, job share or contract? Part time.

What industry do you work in? What do you do? HR & Recruitment. I am a recruiter.

Is your employer understanding of the work/family balancing act? If yes, can you give an example? Yes. My boss has a young child of his own and is flexible to those demands. I’m also set up from home so the nature of my job allows me to juggle both.

Now that you are a mum, have your expectations of work changed? Naturally my priorities have changed & I’m definitely clearer in terms of what I want & don’t want from my job & employer.  I have clearer goals and aspirations. Of course these may change again.

As a mum, what positive attributes do you think you have brought back into the workplace? An ability to multi-task, and a fresh & balanced approach to work and flexibility.

How do you benefit personally from returning to work? I enjoy the social interaction and doing something for myself.  It gives me the opportunity to have a break and I find myself more productive with my daughter when I’m at home.

Do you have any time-saving tips and hints for other mums juggling work and family? Prepare  food/bottles/backpack the night before.  There’s nothing worse rushing around trying to get the baby ready and getting to work on time. Decide what you’re going to wear to work the following day. If you can afford it hire a cleaner.

What are your top 3 tips for other mums returning to work? Recognise that the first few weeks will be difficult leaving your child.  If your child is going into care then I’d suggest getting her/him in a couple of weeks prior so you can both get used to the change of environment. Don’t feel guilty – it will be good for both of you and your needs are equally as important as theirs. Treat yourself to a haircut and facial before returning to work.  This is another new phase of your life - enjoy it!
